Now painstakingly renovated, the 1842 mud-and-straw brick hacienda glows with tile floors, hand-painted murals, an artifact display of 1800s stirrups and porcelain pieces found on-site, gardens, and lots of nooks for tête-à-têtes over a glass of the

Rosie on the House: Flooring choices have grown, include fake wood

For a while, manufacturers worked hard to create porcelain floor tiles that looked just like travertine, quartz or slate, and they were pretty successful at that. Now they're creating tiles that look just like hardwood planks, and those porcelain/wood

The Covered Bridge Artisans Annual Studio is a self-guided event located in Southern Hunterdon County of New Jersey. The 21th annual holiday studio tour will take place in six professional artists' studios in the Lambertville, Stockton and Sergeantsville areas with eleven guest artists at the Cultural Arts Center in Sergeantsville. Skip the Black Friday shopping this year and visit studio locations that will be opened to the public Thanksgiving weekend. Visitors will discover new artwork and crafts, have the opportunity to see inside the studios on historic properties and talk to the artists behind the creativity. New work is presented every year, so make this tour an annual holiday tradition. 28, 29 and 30, from 10 a. m. to 5 p. m. The idea of the group grew out of a desire to bring visitors into the countryside to see high quality work being produced by studio artisans in their historic and architecturally interesting home environments. Among the studios on the tour is, Katherine Hackl of Swan Street Studio in Lambertville, who produces traditionally hand crafted pottery and tile for both private and public installations. Katherine is making porcelain dinnerware this year in new patterns, colors and designs like Joe Pie weed with beetles mugs. Also new this year are an expanded collection of lamps in both the porcelain painted series as well as the sgrafitto carved black and tan, candle holders and candle cup, butter dishes and salt cellars. Also, this year Katherine will have more sculpture work combining porcelain birds and leaves with forged iron into lively branches for table centerpieces. The studio of Annelies vanDommelen is located at the north end of Lambertville on North Union Street. Annelies works in a variety of mediums that include oil painting, watercolors and monotypes. Besides wall art, Annelies makes archival paper boxes with original and vintage papers and artists books that are free standing dioramas made with found objects, cast pins, and original work of art. Dave will be showing new forged sculpture and full size exterior steel sculptures. Consie will be showing a new nine-piece sculpture, "Supreme Court" and other new work. They are also working on a new product line of lighting that will be on display. One of the area's most widely recognized artists, Ty paints in the great tradition of the New Hope school of Impressionist painters. Ty will present a new series of small paintings especially for the tour that are priced far below what his paintings usually command. Karen and Geoff Caldwell of Sunflower Glass Studio outside Stockton continue to explore their new work in fused glass botanicals accented with hand bevels, hand-painted glass and stained glass. They have expanded this kiln formed glass into smaller botanical boxes and their exciting hand-made jeweled confetti glass into vases and candleholders. Besides their collection of stained-glass Christmas trees, they have a new collection of wheel-cut flashed glass ornaments and other fused glass holiday treats. Phoebe Wiley of the Long Lane Farm Studio outside of Sergeantsville is a maker of majolica platters and bowls painted in original designs with bold color combinations. This year Phoebe has made new Blue earthenware plates are the color of Chicory flowers in the early morning and the color of midnight blue, created by a new discovery of firing glaze over glaze. Eleven additional artists will be showing their work this year in Sergeantsville at The Virginia Napurano Cultural Arts Center, an old restored church located close to the school. The new artists this year will be fabric artists Teri Nalbone of Solebury, Pa. She will be showing her hand-made quilts, Joyce McCullough of Warminster, Pa. , will be showing her wood carved objects. And Karen Wychock of Warrington, Pa. , will be displaying her traditional hand-woven baskets. Also showing, are Ellie Wyeth of Hopewell, with original painted floor cloths, Sheila Fernekes, Flemington, with contemporary one-of-a-kind jewelry, interweaving beads, silver, and gems, and glass blower Drew Montesano of Solebury, Pa. Diana... Other artists will be Amy Turner of Doylestown, Pa. , who makes one-of-a-kind hand dyed.

Pots Thru Time With Joy Bridy - This is local clay dug up from around the foundation of my house and I’m going to process it in this old bath tub, and before I process it, I break it up in little pieces and screen it through some hardware cloth, which helps to get any stones, weeds, detritus out of it. This clay does not have high plasticity which means it is a little harder to work with. plasticity definition: Capable of being formed into a shape or moulded without cracking. It might break and crack as I work with it, but that’s probably what I like about it. It adds character, instead of plasticity. It’s also reddish brown stoneware, not real white like a porcelain and not super iron-rich. It won’t be black sort of an orangish color when it’s fired. It will have some porousness. I fire it to a high enough temperature that it’s useful as functional ware as well as sculptural. This clay is also local clay and I’ll break it up into small marble-size pieces and slake it down in...
