Men's Shed gets a roof but has no area to build on

"One day we are hoping to have quite a few buildings and some solid foundations to build on. We would even like to have a proper garden one day." The organisation was lucky enough to receive a shed and is now looking for a suitable block of land on

Is it worth buying a 'posh' garden shed to use as an extra room?

This week's question: We can't afford a three-bed house so are thinking about a “posh” garden shed big enough for a sofa bed, as well as traditional garden storage. Is this feasible? What about using it as a more permanent extra room? Anyone done

It's harvest time - How does your Shropshire garden grow?

“If you've only got a hard surface like concrete use pots, use any containers you have, put up shelves on your wall, use your shed roof if you have one, there are ways of growing your own and the same applies if you have no space at all, again use pots

Men's Shed gets a roof but has no area to build on - Gladstone Observer

AFTER a year of convening in everyone's shed but their own, the Boyne Tannum Men's Shed organisation has finally received a grant allowing the group to buy its own shed. Despite the small problem of not having a block of land to put the shed on, secretary Mike Robbins said they were over the moon. "We may only be halfway there, sure - but we are one step closer to our ambition," he said proudly. "One day we are hoping to have quite a few buildings and some solid foundations to build on. We would even like to have a proper garden one day. The organisation was lucky enough to receive a shed and is now looking for a suitable block of land on which to build. "Our thanks go to all those who supported us: Boyne Smelters Limited who have a working agreement with us, Boyne Tannum Lions Club, who initiated our beginning, and the Gladstone Regional Council, who have worked hard to find us a home," he said. To celebrate, the Boyne Tannum Men's Shed will be holding an open day on August 25 from 9. 30am to 11. 30am at the Tannum Sands Scouts Hall.

Until now, the green roof movement has been limited to large-scale, professional endeavors and public buildings. But homeowners everywhere are catching onto the benefits of a green roof? water conservation, energy savings, and storm water management. In Small Green Roofs authors Dunnett, Gedge, Little, and Snodgrass profile ordinary homeowners who scaled green roofs down to the domestic level. Small Green Roofs is the first book to focus on small-scale and domestic green roofs. More than forty profiles of small and domestic-scale projects of all shapes and sizes include green roofs on sheds, garden offices, studios, garages, houses, bicycle sheds, and other small structures, as well as several community projects. For each project, details are given for design, construction, and installation, as well as how-to tips on how the roof was planted and cared for. For readers looking for inspiration when hiring a contractor or taking the adventurous step of building their own, Small Green Roofs provides the knowledge and encouragement to make it possible.

Gurucharanam Sarnam
Biography of Navajyotisree Karunakara Guru – Revised Edition, 2010
English Translation: Mukundan P.R.
Edited by: Sanghamitra
Publisher’s Note
Santhigiri Ashram through its research wing has been publishing books and journals on health, peace and spirituality in line with the teachings of Navajyothisree Karunakara Guru, whose vibrant and exalted vision augurs well for a civilizational change in the dawn of this millennium. The Great Master lived almost an obscure life away from the blitz of propaganda and publicity. He liked it that way. But, the fragrance of a flower spreads on its own by the natural breeze. The divine fragrance of Guru’s life has spread far and wide today through the little murmurs and whispers of a devoted community of believers.
The life of Navajyothisree Karunakara Guru was an open book, for He lived always among the people, as one of them. However, very little is known about His inner self, which was unfathomable by any human standards. He was close to the devotees’ hearts as the embodiment of love, yet He was incomprehensible to human intelligence. He was simple outwardly and unimaginably holy. Yes indeed, He was the perfect picture of divinity, God in human form, whose touch, glance, speech and...

Disclaimer: A day spent looking at Ecuador through a bus window does not qualify me as an expert in comparative economic development. With that said, it appears Ecuador is more prosperous than Bolivia, where I spent almost two months in the winter (our summer) of 2006. Why do I say that? Well, there's the conventional wisdom that Bolivia is the poorest country in South America. But the sight of this adobe building backs that up. How? Because this was one of the very few adobe buildings I saw in my travels through the highlands around Ecuador's capital, Quito. Occasionally, I'd see the ruins of adobe walls separating fields, but I don't think I saw a single adobe fence that was intact. In contrast, as soon as you leave the concrete-frame-and-cinderblock construction of El Alto, the town that's grown explosively on the altiplano above La Paz, Bolivia, everything, it seems, is built of adobe bricks.

Caudwell's Mill Craft Centre - River Wye - Tea Room
Caudwell's Mill Craft Centre - River Wye - Tea Room

After leaving Haddon Hall we stopped off at Caudwell's Mill Craft Centre. It was a flour mill powered by water. At Rowsley is a unique, grade II* listed historic roller flour mill. Powered by water from the river Wye, one or more mills have stood on this site for at least 400 years. The present mill was built in 1874 by John Caudwell and run as a family business for over a century. The mill was purchased by a charitable trust and has been operated by them for over forty years. At Caudwell’s Mill, grain was milled by the same process used at the giant modern mills which now provide most of the flour for our bread, but here production was on a scale and at a speed that is both easier to understand and which did not damage the flour. mill interiorThe mill is a complete fascinating automatic ‘machine’ on four floors and usually runs daily. Most of the machinery is earlier than 1914 and is still driven by belts (often leather) and pulleys from line shafts. Elevators and...
