LONG BEACH – A few hundred yards separated Richie Brown from his beachfront home. Piles of rubble closed the roads beyond Second Street. Behind his father, Richard, and mother, Melissa, 11-year-old Richie climbed through feet of splintered wood, crumbled concrete and mangled metal. Nails poked through two-by-fours that snapped like toothpicks when hit with Hurricane Katrina’s 135 mph winds. “Shredded houses,” Richard said. The structures that withstood Katrina’s wrath, 10 years ago this month, revealed even more destruction. A number in reflective neon orange paint was scrawled on some houses marking the total dead inside. I’ll put it that way,” Brown said. “You’re going around, you’re seeing places you remember, there’s supposed to be something there, all you see is a slab. When they arrived at their two-bedroom, two-bathroom condo on the second floor only its skeleton remained. The floor caved in. The winds tangled Richard’s red-and-yellow custom racing bike under a car. A cartoon drawing Melissa had sketched on yellow notebook paper of her and Richard disappeared in the rubble. Richie’s favorite stuffed animals, a panda named the Chinese Diplomat and Tasha, a Siberian Tiger, were gone. Katrina had destroyed everything — or so he thought. “I released it all,” Richie said. I said, ‘Lord, it’s in your hands. Richie, Richard and Melissa already left Long Beach once during hurricane season in 2005. The family drove to Arkansas as Hurricane Cindy approached the coast in early July. By the time it hit Mississippi, Cindy had weakened to a tropical depression. The 12th tropical depression formed on Aug. 23: Katrina. “We were like, OK, another storm,” Melissa said. I’m thinking, why isn’t anyone worried about it. ”. As Katrina strengthened through the Caribbean, the Browns packed childhood photos and videos of Richie and his brother Steven. They fled their condo and took shelter with Robert and Dana Taylor, who they knew through church. The Taylors lived about five miles away, north of I-10. The hurricane unleashed its strength on Aug. The wind was howling. It’s a crazy sound,” Richie said. You hear a loud boom and you’re just expecting the roof to cave in at any moment. The families huddled in the kitchen in the center of the house. “Trees are literally falling down around the house we’re staying in,” Richie said. “We’re blessed. The wind blew from the south. At one point, Richie stood outside on a porch facing north. He held a plastic water bottle then released it. Within a second, the wind swallowed it. Robert and Richard toured the destruction in a Jeep later in the afternoon. Katrina’s rain and wind mixed with paper that flew from Gulfport’s damaged factories paved U. S. 49 in papier-mache. When the storm surge receded, it brought with it washing machines, sofas, clothing and Richie’s musical keyboard. Richard found it on the beach weeks later among sand that had lost its white glow. Water and debris made it look like the mud at the bottom of a swamp. “There were no recognizable features as you would go down Highway 90,” Richard said. “I would find myself – and I grew up here – going down, I was like, what road is that. The Browns remained in the Taylors’ safe haven for about three days. With neither electricity nor water, they bathed in the Taylors’ pool. FEMA offered the Browns a trailer to live in, but the family, their cat and hamster traveled to Florida to stay with Melissa’s twin sister, Miranda, in Cocoa Beach. Over the next couple of weeks, they moved to three towns before landing in Tampa with Aunt Monica. They eventually found an apartment in the city, which offered two months of free rent to victims of Katrina. They were the most supportive people ever,” Richie said. “They all embraced me. They were all friends, great friends. His best friends — Chase Caffey and Richie Clark — were miles away. The hurricane forced Caffey to Alabama. Clark moved to Texas with his mother. Melissa begged Richie to explore Tampa, but the sixth-grader opted to spend time in his room, either on the phone or by the computer playing RuneScape, a role-playing game, with Caffey and Clark. “That was my way to hang out with my friends at.

Metal Flat Roof

The roof, the top covering of a building, is one of the universal structures found on all buildings. Its purpose is primarily to shed water off the building and to prevent it from accumulating on top. To achieve this goal, roofs may be highly pitched (sloped) or low sloped in form. Low sloped roofs are commonly found on industrial/commercial type structures. Pitched roofs are the primary design found on residential homes. Metal standing seam roofs are becoming increasingly common on low sloped roof assemblies. Cool roof and green roof are becoming increasingly popular, and in some cases are mandated by local codes.

Residential roof designs in mild climates or where there is little precipitation tend to exhibit lower pitched roofs and drainage at the exterior wall; an example of residential flat roof is that of the adobe construction in the American Southwest. In northern climates, where temperatures drop below freezing, or in southern climates with high temperatures, the need for greater thermal resistance will dictate the type of roof design as well as the waterproofing membrane specification.
