Drag your cursor (on a computer) or swipe your finger (on a phone or tablet) across the photo. The Hurricane Katrina picture will dissolve into a present-day portrait as the subject of the photo is heard telling their story. It was the calm after the storm. When I climbed into a FEMA rescue boat on the edge of Lakeview I expected to hear people calling for help from the flooded houses and rooftops, but no. There was nothing. It was our voices that broke the silence. "Hello," the rescuer shouted out. Then total silence. "Hello," he screamed again, hoping for some response from the flooded homes in Lakeview. It was now nearly 30 hours after Katrina blew through, and long enough for the water from the 17th Street canal levee breech to fill the neighborhood to the eaves. But again, silence. Finally, a faint hello returned from beyond the houses, and we rushed to the other side of the block, only to find another team in a rescue boat yelling "hello. Besides yelling for survivors, we scoured the rooftops for holes. chopped through the shingles, a hopeful sign that people had survived, at least for a while in their attics and had tried to get out. On Louisville Street we found a man perched on his roof, and as we helped him into the boat, he begged us to help his neighbor who lived the next street over. "I heard him screaming all night," he told us. We found the house at 6434 Louis XIV St. There was a hole in the shingles. Our boat landed on the sloped roof as if landing on a beach. The neighbor lay still in the rafters, his hands folded across his chest. This was the first body I saw during my coverage of Katrina. Years later, I found myself knocking on doors for anyone who could tell me what had happened in that attic that day. Every photo tells a story, but this story remained incomplete. I was looking for answers from anyone who might have lived in the neighborhood before Katrina. Remarkably, the first person I talked to knew everything. Living three doors down, Skip Boe, now 62, had witnessed the storm, levee break and flood from his second floor. He remembered Katrina, and he remembered Luke Bonono, the man who died in the rafters at 6434 Louis XIV St. "I try to forget this stuff," Boe said. Street canal levee breach, Boe watched the waters slowly creep into his home. He remembered the confusion he felt at first. He watched from his upstairs window as patio furniture and garage doors blew by, along with his neighbor's boat, still attached to the trailer. "I might need that boat," he thought with a laugh. He dived into the water, swam to the boat. "I wrapped my arm over the boat edge and pulled it back to the house," he said. All Monday night, Boe heard his neighbors crying for help. One in particular, Luke Bonono, 80, lived just three doors down. Boe had helped him board his patio door on Sunday. Boe set out to help Tuesday morning in the commandeered boat. Bonono was screaming and banging on a metal attic ventilator with a broom handle to get anyone's attention. Boe yelled to him, "I'm coming to get you, Luke. Let me get these people on the corner first. "It took a while to get to Mr. Luke," Boe said. When I triaged and surveyed the situation. I went with a gut feeling," and helped the older people first. But Bonono's situation was more urgent than Boe realized. Bonono was panicked because his sister, Anna Mae Bonono, 84, was stuck on the first floor of the home, bedridden and surrounded by rising waters. When Boe finally arrived with his small boat filled with traumatized neighbors, Bonono was in no mood to be rescued. Boe remembered that when he looked down through the hole to help Bonono out, "he was screaming at me, 'You killed my sister. You killed my sister. ' He was swinging a broomstick at me. " Boe couldn't calm him down, so he had to make another choice. He told Bonono, "I'm coming back for you. "What else could I do. Even so, I blame myself," Boe said. "It was 130 degrees in the attics. I could have saved Luke. "I keep hearing from people, 'Quit beating yourself up. '". Ten years later, the neighborhood surrounding Louis XIV Street wears the fresh look of recovery. Boe is back in his fully renovated house. In his bedroom closet hangs the shirt he wore through his ordeal, complete with the sleeves he hacked off with a razor blade. The Bonono home has long been demolished and.

Sheds and other landscape shelters have never been out of style, but they are now seeing a remarkable surge in popularity, and are being used in creative new ways. In many parts of the country, spacious sheds are being fully appointed with furnishings and used as detached rooms for everyday living or as backyard offices. This book offers readers fuel for their aspirations but also provides practical information for planning and building sheds of...
